Spontaneous Signings and Family Adventures: A Day in the Stacks
There is something uniquely thrilling about a "stealth" bookstore visit. No scheduled podium, no microphone—just the quiet anticipation of walking into a shop, scanning the shelves, and seeing my work living out in the world.
Recently, I decided to drop into a couple of local bookstores to sign the copies they had in stock. If you’ve ever wondered what an author feels when they see their book on a shelf, I can tell you: it never gets old. It’s a mix of "pinch-me" disbelief and immense gratitude.
While I was there, I had the chance to cross paths with a few readers. Those unplanned, face-to-face moments are the best part of this job. Hearing what the stories mean to you in the middle of a bookstore aisle reminds me exactly why I spend so many hours alone at my desk.
But the absolute highlight of the day? Having my family there with me.
My wife was behind the lens capturing the day (I’ll be sharing some of those videos soon!), and having my kids see the tangible result of all those "quiet hours" at home was incredibly special. Seeing their faces light up as I signed the title pages made the whole experience hit differently. It wasn't just a work errand; it was a shared family milestone.
To the booksellers who welcomed us and the readers I was lucky enough to meet: thank you. I’m hoping to make more of these random "drop-in" visits soon. Keep an eye on the shelves—you never know when you might find a signed copy waiting for you!
