Touch or Pieces

A young historian (Male/Female) finds they have a hidden power. When they touch an artifact with their bare hands, they are transported back in time to when that piece was last held or when it was significant (Not sure on the details on that).

While in Belfast Ireland, going over documents of the construction of the Titanic, someone brings her/him a box. This box contains a piece of wood that was scrap from the grand staircase. She removes her gloves to document the item when she bumps the box with her elbow. The piece starts to fall so she reaches to catch it. As soon as she catches it, she is flashed back to the Titanic’s maiden voyage, she finds herself in as a ghost walking among the people. They don’t see her, but she can see them. While onboard she learns the true story of (either First Officer Murdoch or the 35 Engineers that worked to keep the lights on). She goes down with the bow section, walks along the ocean floor to the stern section.

Suddenly she is transported back to the present and works to bring what she found to light.

While in her office an old man walks into her office and says “How did you like the trip?”

“Excuse me, what trip?”

He then points to a picture of the titanic on the ocean floor.

“Who are you? How do you know? What happened?”

“I am a fellow historian like yourself, and I once had the gift that you now have. It has been passed to you and am here to tell you why and what you are to do with it.”

He sits himself down in a chair, takes an old book off the shelf and opens it up to no particular page. He begins to speak almost as if reading from the book, but his words couldn’t possibly be from the text.

“You have an acute respect for history, you have treasured the past all your life, looked for answers to your problems by looking at how others before you handled them. If you find an artifact your first reflex is to relish it, not to sell it or profit from it in any way. That’s why the power has been transferred to you.” He paused to turn a page.

“Your job will be to correct mankind's perception of historical events, some major, some trivial, but not to those effected by them.”

“What if I don’t want this job?”

“Oh, my dear, don’t even try to fool yourself, you didn’t even stop to think about what was going to happen to you on this last task, the minute you started learning the truth you were engrossed by it. You know you want this job, don’t try to deny it.”

“When will be my next task? How will I know? This last one.... just kind of happend”

“As they all will, some cases you will feel it, in some you will sort of... fall into them like the Titanic. Some of these tasks you will actually be able to interact with the people, others you will merely observe.”

He closed the book and stood and placed the book back on the shelf.

“I must be off, you and I... we will meet again, till then.”

Next task she holds a revolutionary war musket. Maybe she becomes Sybil Ludington.
